The Other 167 Hours: Why Chiropractic Care Is More Than the Adjustment

When most people think about going to the chiropractor, they think about the adjustment. And yes, the adjustment matters. Restoring movement to a joint that is restricted or irritated can be an important part of helping the body move and feel better.

But the adjustment is only one piece of the picture.

There are 168 hours in a week. Even if you spend an hour with us, your body spends approximately 167 hours outside of our office. During those hours, you are working, sleeping, driving, exercising, carrying kids, sitting at a computer, doing laundry, cooking dinner, standing on the sidelines, scrolling on your phone, and doing all of the other things that make up everyday life.

Those hours matter too.

At A. Butler Chiropractic, one of our core values is that we do not simply want to help you while you are in our office. We also want to help you better understand your body so you can support yourself when you leave.

We Want to Help You, but We Also Want to Help You Help Yourself

Our role is not simply to adjust you, send you on your way, and wait until the same problem comes back.

We want to understand what may be contributing to the problem in the first place.

Sometimes that means looking at how a joint is moving. Sometimes it means looking at the muscles surrounding that joint. Sometimes it means talking about how you sit at work, how you sleep, how you carry your child, what you are doing at the gym, or what movements seem to make the same area irritated again.

Very often, it is not just one thing.

That is why we believe good chiropractic care should include education. You should understand, at least in simple terms, what we are noticing and why we are recommending certain things.

You do not need to know every muscle in the body or understand complicated anatomy. You simply need enough information to begin recognizing your own patterns.

That awareness can make a big difference.

Your Body Does Not Live in Separate Pieces

One of the biggest parts of our approach is looking beyond the exact spot that hurts.

The body works as a connected system. Muscles, joints, movement patterns, and daily habits all influence one another.

A sore shoulder may not only be a shoulder problem. The neck, upper back, chest, and shoulder blade muscles may all be involved.

Low back discomfort may be influenced by what is happening through the hips and glutes.

A knee that keeps bothering you may be affected by the larger muscles above and below the joint.

That is one of the reasons we often say that we do not ignore the muscles.

Our chiropractic care is not focused only on the spine. We look at movement, muscle tension, joint restriction, and the activities that may be contributing to the way you feel.

For some people, the adjustment is the main focus of the appointment. For others, more soft tissue or muscle work may be helpful. Sometimes we spend time talking through a movement or activity that keeps aggravating the problem.

Care should adapt to the person in front of us.

The Goal Is Not Just to Feel Better on the Table

Of course we want you to leave feeling better.

But our bigger goal is to help you feel and move better when you are living your actual life.

That is where those other 167 hours become important.

Think about how much time your body spends in repetitive positions.

If you work at a computer, you may spend hours sitting in nearly the same position.

If you are a mom, you may repeatedly carry a child on the same hip without even thinking about it.

If you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding, your neck and shoulders may spend hours each day bent forward.

If you exercise, certain muscles may be doing more work than others.

If you drive frequently, sit on bleachers, stand all day at work, or sleep in a position that is not especially supportive, your body adapts to those patterns too.

None of these things automatically mean you are doing something wrong. They are simply part of life.

Our job is to help you recognize which patterns may be affecting you and decide whether there are small changes that could make things easier.

Home Care Should Be Realistic

This is especially important because many of the people we care for are busy women.

You are working, parenting, caregiving, exercising, taking care of a household, managing schedules, or doing several of those things at once.

Giving you an hour-long home routine that you are supposed to complete every single day may sound great on paper. In real life, it may never happen.

We would rather give you something you can actually use.

That may be one stretch.

It may be one strengthening exercise.

It may be changing the position of your computer screen.

It may be supporting your arms differently while feeding your baby.

It may be switching which side you carry your child on.

It may simply be getting up and moving after you have been sitting for a long period of time.

Small changes still count.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to find things that realistically fit into your life and support the work we are doing together.

Your Care Should Be a Partnership

We see chiropractic care as a partnership.

We bring our training, experience, assessment, adjustments, soft tissue work, and clinical knowledge to the table.

You bring something equally important: the experience of living in your body every day.

You know when something feels different.

You know which activity makes your shoulder tighten.

You know whether the stretch we gave you feels helpful or whether it is something you forgot to do for three weeks.

And yes, we want you to tell us that too.

We do not expect perfection from our patients. We want honest information.

If an exercise did not work for you, tell us.

If something made you uncomfortable, tell us.

If you did not have time to do the home care, tell us.

If you noticed a certain movement made a big difference, we want to know that too.

That information helps us adjust your care and make recommendations that fit you better.

You Get a Say in Your Care

Another value that is important to us is giving people choices.

We will make recommendations based on what we are seeing and what your goals are. We will explain why we are recommending something and what we think may help.

But you are still the person making the decisions about your care.

Some people come more frequently during a period when something is particularly irritated. Others eventually prefer occasional wellness visits because they have learned that their body feels better when they stay ahead of their usual patterns.

Some people come when they need us.

Some choose regular care because it works well for their lifestyle.

There is not one schedule that fits every person.

Our job is to guide you, educate you, and support you. Your job is to decide what fits your goals, your comfort level, and your life.

Wellness Care Does Not Have to Be Complicated

Wellness can sometimes sound like one more thing you are supposed to be doing perfectly.

Perfect posture. Perfect exercise. Perfect sleep. Perfect nutrition. Perfect stress management.

That is not what we mean when we talk about wellness.

For us, wellness is often much simpler.

It is learning to notice what your body is telling you before you are miserable.

It is recognizing that the headache, stiff neck, tight hip, or irritated shoulder keeps showing up after the same activity.

It is making a few small changes when you can.

It is knowing when you can manage something on your own and when it may be time to ask for help.

And sometimes it is scheduling the appointment before your body has to start yelling at you.

Wellness is not about being perfect. It is about becoming a little more aware of the body you live in every day.

More Than an Adjustment

At A. Butler Chiropractic, we absolutely want to help you feel better.

But we also want you to understand your body better.

We want you to feel comfortable asking questions. We want to know what your days actually look like. We want to look at the muscles and the joints. We want to understand what keeps making the same area angry again and again.

And we want to give you practical tools that make sense outside of our office.

Because chiropractic care is not just about what happens during your appointment.

It is also about helping your body handle the other 167 hours of the week.

We will do our part.

And we will help you learn how to do yours.
