Ladies, Let’s Talk About Your Core & Pelvic Floor (For Real)
If we were sitting together with coffee right now, this is one of the things I’d want to gently bring up, because almost every woman I see is dealing with some version of this—usually quietly, usually thinking it’s “just them.”
So… ladies, can we talk about your core and pelvic floor for a minute? 🩷
Most of us have been told these are the muscles we’re supposed to tighten, squeeze, and “strengthen” all the time.
“Engage your core.”
“Do your Kegels.”
“Hold everything in.”
And sure, strength matters. But that’s not the whole story. Your core and pelvic floor aren’t just about looking strong in a workout—they’re a huge part of your body’s stress and stability system. It’s not just about Kegels and crunches. It’s about how safe your body feels.
When Stress Shows Up in Your Core (Even If You Don’t Notice It)
When you’re under stress—which for most women is… a lot of the time—your nervous system sends quiet little “brace yourself” messages to your body. Nothing dramatic, just subtle holding patterns that add up.
You might catch yourself clenching your jaw, holding your breath, sucking in your stomach, or gripping through your abs or pelvic floor. Sometimes you don’t notice until the end of the day when you finally lie down and realize your whole middle has been “on” all day.
Do that for weeks, months, years… and that bracing becomes your default setting. Your body forgets what it feels like to truly let go.
How It Actually Feels Day to Day
This doesn’t just live in theory. It shows up in your real life.
You might feel pressure or tension in your lower belly or pelvis. You might notice your breathing is shallow, or realize halfway through the day that you’ve been holding your breath on and off. You might feel wired-but-tired—exhausted but unable to actually relax or feel grounded. Or you notice that certain movements feel uncomfortable, or that you feel stiff and sore after sitting, driving, or working all day.
None of that means you’re weak or “doing it wrong.” It’s your body doing its best to feel safe with what it’s been given. Your pelvic floor is deeply connected to your diaphragm and your spine, and all three are influenced by your nervous system. When your nervous system is stuck in alert mode, those muscles stay on guard too.
“I Thought I Just Needed More Core Work…”
I hear this all the time:
“I thought I just needed to strengthen my core.”
“I thought I needed to do more Kegels.”
“I figured I was just weak.”
Here’s the thing: if your body already feels like it has to hold everything together, more squeezing isn’t always the answer. Imagine trying to fix a clenched fist by telling it to squeeze harder. That’s what a lot of women are unknowingly doing with their core and pelvic floor.
Yes, strength is important—especially postpartum, during perimenopause, and through all the busy, high-demand seasons of life. But when your nervous system is constantly braced, those muscles are already working overtime. They don’t just need more tightening. They need support, safety, and a better conversation with the rest of your body.
The Nervous System Is the Boss
Your nervous system is the quiet boss behind the scenes. It decides how much you brace, how deeply you breathe, where you hold tension, and whether your body is in survival mode or in rest-and-repair mode.
Pregnancy, birth, chronic stress, pain, caregiving, grief, the mental load of running a household—all of that stacks up. And your body responds the best way it knows how: it tightens your center so you can “hold it together.”
That’s not your body betraying you. That’s your body trying to protect you.
Where Chiropractic & Massage Help (And Why I Talk About Them So Much)
This is where nervous-system-focused chiropractic care and massage come in—not as some magical fix, but as real support.
In our office, I’m not just looking at “tight muscles.” I’m looking at how your spine and pelvis are moving, how well your nervous system is communicating, and whether your body feels like it’s always bracing for impact.
Chiropractic care helps your spine and nervous system work better together. When we reduce some of that built-up mechanical stress through your spine and pelvis, your brain doesn’t feel like it needs to keep everything locked down all the time. Massage then works on the soft tissues—your muscles and fascia—so that once your system starts to feel safer, the muscles actually have a chance to soften and let go.
What I hear women say when we’ve been working on this for a bit sounds like:
“I can finally take a deep breath.”
“I didn’t realize how much I was clenching until I wasn’t anymore.”
“I feel more grounded in my body, like I’m actually living in it instead of dragging it around.”
That’s not just “better posture” or a stronger core. That’s a foundation that feels safer and more supported.
Real Strength Starts With Safety
We’ve been taught that strength is all about gripping, tightening, and never letting anything sag, soften, or rest. But real strength is actually the ability to engage when you need to and relax when you don’t.
If your body never gets permission to come out of “hold it together” mode, it’s not really about strength—it’s about your nervous system living in survival.
A regulated nervous system is what allows your core and pelvic floor to do their jobs well: supporting your spine, stabilizing your movement, managing pressure when you cough or sneeze, and helping you feel steady in your day-to-day life.
Strength and softness are not opposites.
Safety is what makes both possible.
